Cellular phone usage has been increasing. In 2022, the average non-voice activities on smartphones for the general U.S. population was 4 hours and 29 minutes, and is projected to increase to 4 hours and 35 minutes in 2023. On a global scale, people spend an average of nearly 7 hours per day looking at screens, with Americans slightly surpassing this average at 7 hours and 4 minutes.

The Balancing Act: Finding Moderation in Our Screen Time

Lots of people, regardless of age, feel they spend too much time on their smartphones. People are trying to cut down on screen time, especially young people, because they now understand the harm it can cause.

These statistics show how mobile phones and digital devices are a big part of everyone’s life, regardless of age. With technology becoming more integrated into our lives, and thus higher levels of exposure, it’s crucial to balance the benefits and drawbacks of using mobile phones.

The Unseen Force: Electromagnetic Fields and Their Impact

Our constant companions, mobile phones, connect us through radio waves. These radio waves are a form of electromagnetic field (EMF), a region of energy created by the combined effect of electric and magnetic fields. While the specific type of EMF emitted by phones is non-ionizing, many studies have been conducted to investigate the potential health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by mobile phones. Keeping your phone close to you exposes you to EMFs, which might harm your health by causing oxidative stress to cells and DNA.

Studies on electromagnetic radiation from mobile phone use, particularly in 5G networks, are ongoing. Public health agencies the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have classified mobile phone radiation as ‘possibly cancer-causing’ to humans [4]. They believe that limited evidence necessitates further research. This classification doesn’t confirm that EMFs from mobile phones are proven carcinogens, but it highlights the need for further research to establish the health implications of long-term exposure.

Oxidative Stress: When Radiation Meets the Body’s Defenses

Research has examined both thermal effects, which involve a slight increase in temperature due to radiation absorption by tissues, and non-thermal biological effects. Non-thermal effects can alter cell metabolism and generate free radicals, possibly causing oxidative stress [5, 7]. However, the connection between these biological responses from cell phone exposure and significant health issues remains inconclusive.

With the advancement of technology and the expansion of stronger 5G networks, it’s crucial to grasp the possible increased risk to health from EMF exposure. Ongoing research and better experimental methods are necessary to gain deeper insights into the health impacts of mobile phone radiation over time.

The Electromagnetic Body: Bridging Traditional Chinese Medicine and Modern Science

In the realm of health and wellness, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long offered a unique perspective on the human body. Unlike Western medicine, which primarily focuses on the physical aspects, TCM views the body as a complex system of energy flows and balances. At the core of this understanding is Qi, the vital energy that flows through the body along meridians.

Although Chinese medicine has embraced these concepts for centuries, they have frequently been regarded as metaphorical or philosophical. Recent research is finding connections between traditional Chinese medicine and modern science, suggesting there could be a scientific rationale for these ancient concepts. This is especially true in the field of electromagnetic fields.

The Quantum Connection: Grounding TCM in Modern Physics

One of the most intriguing ideas to emerge from this intersection is the notion that the Qi energy described in TCM could be understood as electromagnetic waves. Some researchers believe that meridians could transmit cosmic information to the body, acting as biological tuners [6]. If true, this could provide a scientific foundation for the long-held belief in TCM that the body is not just a physical entity, but an energetic one as well.

Experimental studies have discovered that meridians and acupoints possess physical properties such as magnetism and electrical characteristics. The findings suggest meridians are physical pathways with low electric resistance. These pathways allow for stable circular currents of electromagnetic and chemical oscillation. Observable myoelectric activity along these pathways could offer a means of understanding how the body’s functional states are reflected in its energetic patterns.

Bioelectric Harmony: Aligning Eastern and Western Energy Concepts

Electromagnetic Plasma Field

Building on existing research, some scientists have proposed the concept of Quantum TCM [8]. This is the hypothesis that the Qi energy recognised in TCM is comparable to the bio-electromagnetic energy known in Western science. Essentially, it proposes that Qi and bio-electromagnetic fields share the same underlying mechanisms, effects, and basis, potentially bridging the gap between Eastern and Western views of the body’s energy systems.

While these ideas are fascinating, it’s important to acknowledge their current speculative nature. Researchers are still actively exploring the connections between electromagnetic fields, quantum theory, and TCM. These investigations could lead to an exciting future for medicine, where ancient wisdom and modern science come together to understand the human body as an electromagnetic entity.

Dr. Yoshio Manaka’s Pioneering Study: Bridging Acupuncture and Electromagnetism

Dr. Yoshio Manaka was a visionary in the field of acupuncture, known for his innovative approach that integrated traditional practices with modern scientific concepts, particularly in the realm of electromagnetism. His research has advanced our understanding of the biophysical aspects of acupuncture and its effects on our well-being.

Millimeter Waves and The Electromagnetic Frame: Decoding the Body’s Energetic Blueprint

One of Dr. Manaka’s key areas of exploration was the application of low-intensity electromagnetic millimeter waves (MW) to acupuncture points. This approach is based on the idea that electromagnetic fields can influence the body’s energy system, potentially offering a non-invasive therapeutic technique, but also insight into how excessive exposure to EMFs could be harmful to our health.

Dr. Manaka also proposed a model of an ‘electromagnetic frame’ for the human body, grounded in the principles of quantum physics and supported by physiological and clinical research [9]. This model helps interpret the nature of acupuncture meridians and explains the mechanisms behind acupuncture’s effects on the body. Additionally, he developed the use of ion pumping cords in acupuncture treatments, which are designed to balance ionic flows and concentrations across the body, aligning with his broader interest in the body’s electromagnetic properties and how they can be influenced to promote health.

The Energy Field Generated By The Human Heart, 3d Illustration

Dr. Manaka’s research into electromagnetic fields and their interaction with the body has paved the way for innovative approaches to acupuncture diagnostics and treatment. It suggests that the body’s health can be influenced by electromagnetic fields, both internal and external, and that these fields can interact with the body’s energy system in ways that may have therapeutic benefits. This aligns with the broader concept in acupuncture and Traditional East Asian Medicine that the body’s energy flow (Qi) can be manipulated to promote health and treat illness.

Mobile Phone Radiation: Disruption of the body’s natural EMF

From the perspective of Dr. Manaka’s work, the potential adverse health effects of non ionizing radiation from a mobile phone could be described in terms of disruptions to the body’s natural electromagnetic fields. His research suggests that external electromagnetic influences, such as those from mobile phones, could potentially disturb the body’s informational system and energetic balance, highlighting a health risk including the potential for radiation-induced conditions. This disruption could manifest in various ways, including:

  1. Disruption of the Body’s Informational System: Manaka viewed the body as having an informational system that regulates the energetic system and responds to stimuli. Mobile phone radiation could be seen as an external stimulus that might disrupt this informational system, leading to potential health issues. This disruption might also manifest as oxidative stress, which aligns with Manaka’s understanding of disruptions in the body’s energy system.
  2. Electromagnetic Field Disturbances: Manaka’s conception of the human body encompassing electromagnetic fields implies that illness and injury can create disturbances in these fields. Manaka’s research suggests that the body’s electromagnetic fields have specific frequencies and resonances. If mobile phone radiation frequencies happen to match or interfere with these natural resonances, it could lead to more significant disruptions in the body’s energy system, potentially leading to imbalances and adverse health effects. The potential for mobile phone radiation to cause neurological effects, including changes in brain function, could also be understood through Manaka’s lens as a disturbance in the electromagnetic fields that influence neural pathways and brain activity.
  3. Interference with Acupuncture Points: Since Manaka’s work suggests that acupuncture points are sensitive to electromagnetic fields, mobile phone radiation could interfere with these points, potentially affecting the flow of Qi through the meridian system and the overall energy balance within the body.
  4. Altered Biological Reactions: The patent related to Manaka’s work mentions that magnetic fields can alter the orientation of blood cells and induce changes in biological reactions. Mobile phone radiation could similarly influence biological processes, possibly leading to adverse health outcomes.
  5. Cumulative Effects: The long-term, cumulative exposure to mobile phone radiation could be particularly concerning from Manaka’s perspective. Chronic disruption of the body’s electromagnetic fields could potentially lead to more severe health consequences over time. This requires special consideration given the average usage of a cell phone on the increase across all age groups.
  6. Individual Sensitivity: Manaka’s work acknowledges that individuals may have different sensitivities to electromagnetic influences. Some people may be more susceptible to the effects of mobile phone radiation than others, based on their unique energetic and electromagnetic profiles.

Further research, integrating Manaka’s insights with contemporary studies on electromagnetic exposure, could deepen our understanding of these interactions and their implications for health.Understanding these possible effects is important for promoting safe mobile phone usage and addressing any associated risks. This research could potentially lead to the development of new therapies and preventative measures to mitigate the potential adverse effects of mobile phone radiation and other sources of electromagnetic exposure.

Shielding the Body: TCM’s Holistic Defences Against the Risk of Mobile Phone Radiation

In addressing the challenge of mobile phone radiation, Chinese Medicine offers a variety of practices to support well-being. These practices include acupuncture and herbal remedies aimed at promoting balance and supporting the body’s vitality.

To address concerns related to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), it’s important to focus on lifestyle and dietary adjustments that align with Chinese medicine principles. By integrating practices that support overall health and well-being, such as maintaining proper hydration and emphasizing seasonal nutrition, you can support your body’s natural balance.

Acupuncture’s Balancing Act: Restoring Qi Amid EMF Exposure

In today’s world, mobile phones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. However, with the increasing use of these devices, concerns have been raised about the potential health effects of the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by mobile phones. As a result, many people are seeking ways to reduce their exposure to these fields, and one popular solution is the use of anti-radiation mobile phone cases such as Safe Sleeve phone cases.

While the idea of using an anti-radiation case to protect yourself from mobile phone EMFs is appealing, it’s important to approach these products with a critical eye. Some of the concerns with these products include:

  1. Effectiveness and Independent Verification: While manufacturers may assert the efficacy of anti-radiation mobile phone cases, independent testing frequently indicates limited reduction in exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). This disparity of consistent evidence raises doubts about the extent of their benefits.
  2. Potential for Unintended Exposure: Some cases could inadvertently increase your exposure to radiation rather than mitigating it. This can happen if the case interferes with the phone’s antenna, causing it to work harder to maintain a connection, which in turn increases the EMF emissions [10]. Alternatively, cloth shielding material with metal woven into it could reflect or absorb radio waves, potentially increasing exposure rather than decreasing it. This potential for unintended consequences highlights the need for rigorous, independent testing of these products.

Despite these concerns, including the health risks and possible cancer risk associated with cell phone radiation, it’s understandable that many people are interested in finding ways to reduce their exposure to mobile phone EMFs. While the evidence for the effectiveness of these cases may be limited, some people may still find them to be a worthwhile investment for their peace of mind.

In addition to using an anti-radiation case, there are other steps you can take to reduce your exposure to mobile phone EMFs. These include:

  • Using a hands-free device to keep the phone away from your head
  • Texting instead of making voice calls when possible
  • Avoiding using your phone in areas with weak signal strength, as this can cause the phone to emit higher levels of EMFs.

Personally I have chosen to utilise a Safe Sleeve case both for my phone and laptop. For me, the potential for harm with a carcinogenic risk profile that can only truly be determined retrospectively through epidemiological studies (the ethics committees would never let a true study take place) leads me to desire proactive steps to protect myself and my family. Better safe than sorry for me on this one.

Ultimately, the decision to use an anti-radiation mobile phone case is a personal one that should be based on your own assessment of the available evidence and your individual concerns about EMF exposure. It’s important to be informed and make decisions that align with your personal values and priorities when it comes to your health and well-being.

Embracing Balance: TCM’s Harmonious Approach to Modern Radiation Exposure

To summarize, the potential effects of mobile phone radiation on the body’s electromagnetic field, as understood in the context of traditional Chinese Medicine, may have implications for health.

By balancing the body’s Qi through practices such as acupuncture and herbal remedies, TCM may offer a way to support well-being amidst exposure to RF-EMF.

While ongoing research into protective measures is underway, incorporating TCM principles can provide a holistic approach to addressing these modern concerns, combining ancient insights with present-day challenges.

What are the symptoms of phone radiation?

Symptoms of phone radiation exposure can vary from person to person. Some common symptoms may include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, and skin irritation. These symptoms can be mild or more severe depending on the individual’s sensitivity to electromagnetic fields.

In addition to physical symptoms, some people may also experience psychological effects such as anxiety or difficulty concentrating. It’s important to pay attention to how your body and mind feel when using your phone and to take steps to minimize exposure if you are experiencing any negative effects.

How many hours should I use my phone a day?

To minimize your exposure to mobile phone radiation, it’s important to limit the amount of time you spend using your phone each day. While there is no specific guideline for how many hours you should use your phone, it’s generally recommended to use it as little as possible.

One way to reduce your phone usage is to set specific boundaries for yourself, such as only checking messages or social media at certain times of the day or using your phone for essential tasks only. Additionally, taking breaks from your phone throughout the day and engaging in other activities can help reduce your overall exposure to EMFs.

Ultimately, it’s important to find a balance that works for you and prioritize your health and well-being when it comes to mobile phone usage. By being mindful of how much time you spend on your phone and taking steps to minimize your exposure to radiation, you can help protect yourself and support your overall health.

Is it OK to sleep with phone on airplane mode?

To prevent phone radiation exposure while sleeping, there are several steps you can take to create a safer sleeping environment. One way is to keep your phone at a distance from your body, such as placing it on a nightstand or desk instead of under your pillow or next to your bed. This can help reduce the amount of EMFs that are absorbed by your body while you sleep.

Another option is to use a radiation-blocking phone case or EMF shield to further reduce your exposure to phone radiation. Additionally, turning off your phone can help reduce radiation exposure, as the device emits less electromagnetic radiation when it is powered off. While turning off your phone is a simple and effective way to limit your exposure to EMFs, it may not completely eliminate all radiation risks.

In addition to turning off your phone, you can also consider using airplane mode or turning on the “Do Not Disturb” setting at night to further reduce your exposure to phone radiation. These settings can disable the phone’s wireless functions, such as Wi-Fi and cellular data, which are sources of electromagnetic radiation.

Which is more harmful WiFi or mobile data?

Both Wi-Fi and mobile data emit electromagnetic radiation, which can potentially have health risks. The difference lies in the intensity of radiation exposure – Wi-Fi emits low-level radiation constantly, while mobile data transmissions can vary in intensity depending on usage.

While both sources of radiation can impact health, studies have shown that prolonged exposure to high levels of electromagnetic fields from mobile data may have more harmful effects compared to Wi-Fi .

What about cordless phones?

Cordless phones, like cell phones, emit electromagnetic radiation that can potentially have health risks with prolonged exposure. While the amount of radiation emitted by cordless phones is generally lower than that of cell phones, it is still important to be mindful of your usage and take steps to minimize your exposure.

To reduce your exposure to radiation from cordless phones, consider using a traditional landline phone instead for long phone calls. Additionally, keeping the base station of the cordless phone at a distance from where you spend most of your time can help reduce radiation exposure. Using a speakerphone or headset while talking on the cordless phone can also help minimize direct contact with the device.

Is it dangerous to wear a smart watch?

Wearing a smartwatch can also expose you to electromagnetic radiation, as these devices use wireless technology to communicate with your phone. While the amount of radiation emitted by smartwatches is generally lower than that of smartphones, long-term exposure can still have potential health risks.

To minimize your exposure to radiation from a smartwatch, consider taking breaks from wearing it throughout the day. Remove the watch while sleeping or when not needed, and opt for a traditional watch instead. Additionally, consider using airplane mode or turning off unnecessary wireless functions on the smartwatch to reduce radiation exposure.
